Emma Li Captures the Beauty of Ocean Life
Welcome to Hero of the Week, an ongoing series sharing stories from some of the best photographers in the Pexels community.
By day, Emma Li is a master free diving instructor in beautiful Bali. In her free time she also shoots captivating photos of surfers, divers, and the creatures who call the ocean home. We talked to Emma about her photography and why the ocean inspires her.
Pexels: How did you get started with photography?
Emma: I did my first underwater photo in Tonga in 2019.
That was my first time swimming with humpback whales and I didn't want to miss any beautiful moment of that. So I borrowed my friend's Sony RX-5 and just took some photos of whatever I wanted.
What camera gear do you use?
Currently I'm using Sony 6500 with 10-18mm lens.
What's your favorite type of photography to shoot?
I like all kinds of photo shooting but underwater photography is my favorite. Because all ocean creatures are so beautiful and I'd love to share them with others.
What inspires your photography?
No doubt the ocean! At the beginning I'm just enjoying the big blue water, then I started trying to take some pictures.
Tell us about your favorite photo on your Pexels profile.
This is my favorite so far! I know I will have a better one soon. I like it because the humpback whale looks so elegant and pretty, like she is dancing in space—also this is my first underwater photo.
Who are some other photographers or artists who inspire your work?
Actually I don't have a special photographer to name, but Eli Dipp is my friend and we always took pictures and learn how to improve photo shooting together.
What's one piece of advice you would give someone who is new to photography?
Enjoy what you do! If you are enjoying taking photos of what you like, of course you will get amazing pictures.
